Where Nokia went wrong . Where they just living in the past ?

Nokia’s agreement on Tuesday to sell its handset business to Microsoft for $7.2 billion is something of a minor business coup for Nokia, since a year from now that business might well turn out to have been worth nothing. It also demonstrates just how far and fast Nokia has fallen in recent years. Not that long ago, it was the world’s dominant and pace-setting mobile-phone maker. Today, it has just three per cent of the global smartphone market, and its market cap is a fifth of what it was in 2007—even after rising more than thirty per cent on Tuesday.

What happened to Nokia is no secret: Apple and Android crushed it. But the reasons for that failure are a bit more mysterious. Historically, after all, Nokia had been a surprisingly adaptive company, moving in and out of many different businesses—paper, electricity, rubber galoshes. Recently, it successfully reinvented itself again. For years, the company had been a conglomerate, with a number of disparate businesses operating under the Nokia umbrella; in the early nineteen-nineties, anticipating the rise of cell phones, executives got rid of everything but the telecom business. Even more strikingly, Nokia was hardly a technological laggard—on the contrary, it came up with its first smartphone back in 1996, and built a prototype of a touch-screen, Internet-enabled phone at the end of the nineties. It also spent enormous amounts of money on research and development. What it was unable to do, though, was translate all that R. & D. spending into products that people actually wanted to buy.

One way to explain this is to point out that Nokia was an engineering company that needed more marketing savvy. But this isn’t quite right; in the early aughts, Nokia was acclaimed for its marketing, and was seen as the company that had best figured out how to turn mobile phones into fashion accessories. It’s more accurate to say that Nokia was, at its heart, a hardware company rather than a software company—that is, its engineers were expert at building physical devices, but not the programs that make those devices work. In the end, the company profoundly underestimated the importance of software, including the apps that run on smartphones, to the experience of using a phone. Nokia’s development process was long dominated by hardware engineers; software experts were marginalized. (Executives at Apple, in stark contrast, saw hardware and software as equally important parts of a whole; they encouraged employees to work in multidisciplinary teams to design products.)

It wasn’t just that Nokia failed to recognize the increasing importance of software, though. It also underestimated how important the transition to smartphones would be. And this was, in retrospect, a classic case of a company being enthralled (and, in a way, imprisoned) by its past success. Nokia was, after all, earning more than fifty per cent of all the profits in the mobile-phone industry in 2007, and most of those profits were not coming from smartphones. Diverting a lot of resources into a high-end, low-volume business (which is what the touch-screen smartphone business was in 2007) would have looked risky. In that sense, Nokia’s failure resulted at least in part from an institutional reluctance to transition into a new era.

And there was another mistake. Nokia overestimated the strength of its brand, and believed that even if it was late to the smartphone game it would be able to catch up quickly. Long after the iPhone’s release, in fact, Nokia continued to insist that its superior hardware designs would win over users. Even today, there are people who claim that if Nokia had stuck with its own operating systems, instead of embracing the Windows Phone in 2011, it could have succeeded. But even though the Windows Phone has been a flop, the truth is that, by 2010, Nokia had already introduced too many disappointing phones, and its operating system had already proven too buggy, clunky, and unintuitive to win consumers over. In 2008, Nokia was said to have one of the most valuable brands in the world. But it failed to recognize that brands today aren’t as resilient as they once were. The high-tech era has taught people to expect constant innovation; when companies fall behind, consumers are quick to punish them. Late and inadequate: for Nokia, it was a deadly combination.

Great Tips for Increasing Adsense Earnings

Boy I was pissed. I worked a full month, busting my tail, trying to increase google adsense revenue. I opened up my backoffice. Cents. Cents? Cents! I cannot explain how angry I felt. Have you been there? Have you ever been frustrated out of your mind? Ready to throw in the adsense towel? Probably so, unless you are a celebrity. Even successful bloggers suffered through low-producing adsense months. Some keywords pay out big. Most keywords pay out, menz a menz. A little bit here, a little bit there. A few pennies here, a few pennies there. Or you might snag a dollar or 2 per click but snag 1 or 2 clicks daily, if that. The trick lies in the study of successful google adsense campaigns.

First thing: do not, do not, do not compare yourself to blogs like Mashable, or The Huffington Post, if your blog pales in comparison to either of these world-renowned blog. Consider modeling your blogs after these titans of the blogging world, these winners, these champions, but do not attempt to create 50 posts a day to replicate their results.

This will not work. This does work: reading my 13 tips. Following the advice I share. I have passed the penny a month club in terms of adsense revenue. I have passed the $10 per month club. I make more money because I followed the leader yet I did not compare myself to leaders. I did my best to create quality, dead on, targeted content. I lost attachment – well, at least wicked attachment – to numbers. Yes, I detached from ad outcomes to make money online.

A funny thing happens if you stop trying to make money online. You make money online with less and less effort. Cash finds you. The work part becomes play. The stress dies. The struggle dies. Fun. Easy peasy. Really.

Growth works like this; any increase is preceded by some massive release. Like in my case…..

1: Release the Idea that Volume Posting Boosts Ad Revenue Volume posters rock. But volume posters forget one key idea; people need to see your brilliance to click on your ads. Most posts go unnoticed. Oh well. Recruit a team of writers. Build your network. Grow your list. If most of your posts snag a bunch of eyeballs – that sounds graphic right? – your google adsense revenue rises.

If you are the sole writer for your blog release the idea of volume. Focus on building a resource. With each post. Make money online by creating an astounding piece of content.

2: Hold this Intent Each time I write a post – now – I visualize a reader googling a search term, finding my post, reading my post, then saying to themselves:

“That is all I need to know on that topic. Research material found. ~ Random Guy or Gal Googling Ryan’s Blog Posts”

I write paid guest posts on varying topics. I research. If I find a poorly written, thin, short article, I am annoyed. If I find a well-written, thorough article, a piece of work I can use to write a 500 to 700 word post with plenty of research data to spare, I am one happy camper.

Now, if somebody googles “google adsense”, or “how to increase google adsense earnings” to find this article I want them leaving full. I want to create resources through each post. Because google loves resources. Google loves people to find exactly what they are googling and google pays out top adsense dollar – or at least healthy adsense dollar – to people who take the time and devote energy to creating resources.

3: Target Practice
Visualize yourself shooting an arrow at a target. Now, visualize yourself publishing a post for the perfect crowd. This post would be perfect for people needing to learn more about google adsense. Excellent. So the search phrase “google adsense” pops up all over my blog. This makes sense, right?

I think so. Target practice. People who want to learn about google adsense are likely to click on my ads. More clicks, the more I make money online. The concept is simple. If you pay attention to who you want to target. Keep your target market in mind to attract interested viewers and to nail down a higher payment per click.

4: Be at Peace with Generating Pennies in the Beginning I have churned out a few sensational posts. Great. No millions yet after these posts. Some generated pennies’ worth of ad revenue. This is OK. Why? The pay off is happening now but might now show up now. Do you like that statement? Embracing the idea helps you to make money online quickly.

Drill this idea into your head; money chases value. If you create value and make friends by promoting fellow bloggers value finds you in the form of money, money making ideas and prospering relationships and situations. I learned this lesson quickly. Except “quickly” means it took me 4 years to embrace the idea versus the lifetime it takes others to hug the idea.

Money follows value but maybe not in this second. Take a deep breath. Relax. Be at peace. Relax. Detach from appearances. Relax. Good. You my friends are on the right Google Adsense track.

5: Post with Passion I have written technically sound posts which were as dry as reading a technical manual. I have written energized posts which could have raised the dead yet this was not targeted content, so I saw little google adsense revenue through these offerings. Then, wow, then I got my act together. I wrote practical, keyword-rich posts targeted at a set audience.

No more dollar a month deals! Yippee! $25. Heck, $130, I hit my payment threshold, thanks Google. Please right into my bank account please. Gracias. Hey, I post with passion much of the time. I needed to learn how to target with passion so I could make money online while traveling God’s green earth. Next trip? Well it is this Sunday, and I am flying halfway across the world….stay tuned

6: Place Adsense Ads Above the Fold After I placed google adsense ads above the fold my payout per click skyrocketed from 30 cents to over 80 cents per click. Here is the deal; if you are driving down the NJ Turnpike you note the ad plastered all over a massive billboard, a visible billboard on the road side. You do not notice an ad placed behind a building on the side of the road….only if you exit the turnpike and travel down a road with less traffic.

Posting ads below the fold reduces your impressions because many people never scroll below the fold. Advertisers have no desire to pay out for someone who hides their ads; no visibility. So get over the idea of hiding your ads, or burying ads. Post ‘em above the fold. Be obvious about it. Generating higher adsense earnings.

7: Lose this Crowd From time to time somebody tells me they wish I had not placed ads on my blog. Spoils the experience. I usually respond with….

“I wish you would not go to your job, or run your online business. It spoils my experience. I believe you are making a mistake. Sell out.”

OK maybe I reserve the harshness but I make this point: I make a living providing insane value to my audience and if people or advertisers want to pay me to be a part of this insane value I busted my ass to deliver over years, yep, I am entitled to make money.

Dolts hate ads. Usually poor people who have zero prosperity consciousness. We all deserve to get paid but some mentally-closed people cannot see this. Leave this crowd behind. Carry on.

8: Write Intriguing Titles Nobody clicks on an ad they cannot see. People who never click your links on twitter or Facebook, or who do not click your posts after scanning the title in their feedly reader, this crowd never gives you a chance to earn extra adsense dough.

Your adsense earnings increase if more people view your blog posts. I noted a quick surge in post views the moment I payed attention to which titles attracted more viewers.

Popular titles include:

  1. 12 tips to….
  2. 9 steps to….
  3. 8 reasons why….
  4. Why?
  5. How?
Easy right? Use numbers. Ask questions Watch your page views jump. Watch your adsense earnings increase. Think through creative ways to connect with more readers. Study metrics. Duplicate. Do the same thing, or write a similar themed post with similar titles to draw in interested readers and increase your ad clicks.

9: Post Multiple Ads on Your Blog Posting multiple ads increases your clicks. Think abundance. If you create intense, targeted value you have every right in the world to post ads on your blog. Remember; you built the real estate and have every right to make money on that real estate.

Post ads above the fold and below the fold. Google only allows 3 adsense ads per page; follow their rules or get banned. But do post multiple ads to increase the chances of getting some juicy clicks.

Address any fears around prospering online. Address any fears around making money online. Broke people offer broke advice, like, that you should remove ads from your blog. Even big money makers who cannot quite see amazing value in what they do might offer crappy advertising advice.

But the blogs which rake in serious google adsense earnings know the drill; create great, targeted, content, advertise early, advertise often, and you might just earn yourself a wonderful living by partnering with Google to post ads.

10: Make ‘Em Big Big ads get noticed. Big ads get clicked. Big ads can generate bigger ad revenue. Revisit the NJ Turnpike example. Advertisers pay big bucks for big, eye-catching ads because obvious works. Right? Small ads go unnoticed. Big ads get noticed. Point blank.

Post big ads to snag attention spans. Get more clicks. Boost your google adsense earnings.

11: Try Not to Increase Google Adsense Earnings I know this sounds stupid but let me tell you a story. I posted 50 to 60 short, 1 minute to 30 second long videos a day. Good ones too. All to boost ad revenue. But it did not work because Google wants each blog post to be a resource. Advertisers wish to post on masterpieces of work, not quick and simple pieces of work.

Go above and beyond by detaching from outcomes. Follow each tip religiously. You will see a healthy jump in google adsense earnings by being disciplined.

Conclusion Simple works. Smart, persistent work, works. Boost your ad revenue by creating insane value and building your network, and by following a few basic tips daily.

Be persistent. Detach from outcomes.
